Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a reading? Where ever you are, you can get a smoke reading! I offer 1:1 remote readings and very occasional in-person readings at events in the mid-Atlantic area. Check my journal for posts about upcoming appearances or use the booking page to schedule your remote session right away.

How does a remote reading work?

Remote readings allow you to experience my capnomancy sessions from anywhere in the world. I have done readings remotely for seekers in Europe, Asia, and all over North America. With remote readings, you send me specific answers to questions and we will meet online. From me, you will receive your soot drawing, as well as a several page PDF write-up about the session.

Where does capnomancy come from?

Smoke divination, a form of pyromancy, or fire reading, is as old as fire itself. No one knows when or where this practice began. Likely long before recorded history.

The first documented capnomacy happened in ancient Babylon, approximately 2000 B.C., when cedar burned in ceremonial fires was translated by priests. Delphi’s oracles were also reported to use smoke in their seeing, as well as ancient Greeks, who preferred animal sacrifices in their smoke reading fires. Druids are believed to have used oak and mistletoe for capnomancy.  Another variation was practiced by Etruscans, who threw various seeds into fire and omens were interpreted based on the audible sounds of the popping seeds as they burned.

How did you learn to read smoke?

I’m self-taught. Several years back I started observing smoke from my backyard fires, noting the patterns and shapes were similar to those I saw in tea cups. I practiced indoors with my homemade incense cones. Two years ago, I trained with psychic Julia Gray. Her system added to my existing practice and she taught me to capture soot for drawings.

My start with the symbology, though, predates my capnomancy practice. Not only have I been involved with tea leaves since high school, but growing up, my dad and I used to play “scribble art.” Basically, we would each close our eyes and scribble all over a page. Then we traded scribbles and used colored pencils to find shapes in the mess and make art from it. Looking for patterns came naturally to me. Over time, I have added to my symbology vocabulary with classes and further study.

Is capnomancy a way to tell the future?

When I intuitively read smoke and soot, I see a deep reflection of who you are and the moment of your life you exist in now. Personal things often come up, and sometimes you will be called to tend to challenges you’d rather avoid. It’s not unusual for seekers to react emotionally to the symbols and messages in their smoke and soot drawings. Capnomancy offers nudges, but you and those around you have free will. Decisions can rapidly change your future outcome.

Do you teach capnomanc? Yes. I offer in-person and remote introductory smoke reading classes. Contact me for references and booking details.
